There's nothing like being on the water to wipe your concerns away. Out on your boat, you are either concentrating hard in a stiff breeze, the responsiveness of your every move requiring all your concentration, or else you are in calm waters; relaxing as you drift in the sunshine, taking the time to watch every ripple on the water pass you by. What a great way to enjoy a day out with the kids or with your friends!

Sailing has often had a tag of being a rich man's hobby, and when you take a look at the yachts on display at the boat show, or moored in the marina at Monte Carlo it's not hard to see why. You don't have to have a fortune to enjoy a spot of sailing! There are many ways to mess around in boats at affordable prices. Here at mySailing we tried to come up with some ideas help you relieve your recession depression and get you out on the water:
1/. Contact your local sailing club! Often clubs will have members who are short of crew for a weekend sail and will be more than keen to take you out on the water for free! Who knows, you might make some new friends as well as getting to sail a variety of different boats. This applies as much to yachting as it does to dinghy sailing, making yourself regularly available and being reliable can turn you into a real asset for any yacht team. If you don't ask, you'll never know. Here at mySailing we've recently constructed a directory of sailing clubs around mainland UK. Find a sailing club near you. We're going to be adding a lot more information about each club over the coming months so keep an eye out for developments.
2/. Buy a second hand boat jointly with a friend. Most boats require a crew, it's a sociable sport. Are any of your friends or family keen to learn to sail or are already active sailors? It's worth considering buying a second hand boat between you. The great thing then is you can split all the costs like club fees, boat insurance and maintenance between the two of you. The chances are that you will end up sailing a lot more if you've got another keen friend spurring you to get out of bed just that little bit earlier on a Saturday.
3/. Add a couple of days into a holiday. Sailing holidays can be found quite cheaply at the moment. Personally I'm considering signing up for a week with my girlfriend, dinghy sailing in Turkey with Sunsail. Considering that the accommodation, flights and all the boat hire is included, the prices are very reasonable, but I accept that for many that's still too expensive, particularly if you have a family to think of. As an alternative it is well worth looking for a club that you can hire boats from. Even if you are having an affordable camping holiday in Cornwall, you can add a bit of Swallows and Amazon's style adventure by hiring a boat for a day, turning a good holiday into a fantastic one.
